Tony Rice is a traditional country, bluegrass and acoustic guitarist who has won numerous awards for his work in country music. Born David Anthony Rice, Tony was born on June 8, 1951 in Danville, Virginia.
The illustrious Tony Rice spreads his career out to cover many different genres and subgenres. From traditional bluegrass music, he dabbles in jazz-influenced music too, as well as writes songs that are based on folk music. Tony Rice has also worked alongside many other classic greats, notably J.D. Crowe and the New South and David Grisman. He has also collaborated with Norman Blake and his own Tony Rice Unit. Rice has been recorded playing the drums, piano, soprano sax, and traditional bluegrass instruments, showing off his unparalleled versatility.
Tony Rice has won many awards throughout his career. In 1983, he won a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. He has also won a handful of International Bluegrass Music Association Awards between 1990 to 1997. The IBMA has awarded him with Instrumental Performer of the Year, twi Instrumental Group of the Year (for The Tony Rice Unit and The Bluegrass Album Band), and Instrumental Album of the year.
